Email: N/A I bought a book on photography a few months back. In it there are numerous fotos taken by many proffessional photographers from all over the world. I was leafing through it the other day when suddenly i stopped on a Black and white photo of boats in a small harbour,.. my attention was drawn to a boat which looked amazingly similar to the Orca. It had the flying bridge, same mast, same bow with the pulpit,.. i thought it WAS the Orca!!. But it was a little smaller in scale to that boat. But i started to look at the foto a little closer and realized it was taken practically in the same spot where Quints shack was built in Marthas Vineyard!!. That same little inlet we see in the film where the trio heads out to sea. Comparing it to an actual still of the scene from the film i could see that it was infact the same inlet. But to have a boat that looked exactly like the Orca, but wasnt!! in the same place was wierd. Maybe they got inspiration from it! I was wondering if any of you, like myself, can appreciate the acting ability from some of the non- speaking, secondary beach goers? How about the heavy set fellow who pushes the people off the raft to get out if the water. That scene is way hilarious. What are some other scenes that might fall into that category? The woman screaming while holding her kid for dear life was pretty classic too Current Thread shown below: ==== thread RE: secondary scenes Author: Fred Date: 7/14/01 12:39:49 AM Fred, the author, may EDIT this message. Email: N/A I definitly agree. The woman and child shot is classic. The chopper thrown in the backround for effect, really makes it work. The whole beach sequence is really layered. I wonder if the Orca in J2 is the same as the one in J1? v ==== thread RE: Orcas Author: Shaun Date: 6/13/01 1:54:37 AM Shaun, the author, may EDIT this message. The Orca in J2 was another replica made for the shots underwater in California. You can tell, because if you look at the side they show is the left side. This is the side Jaws broke apart trying to get at Brody before he threw the tank in his mouth. This was an oversite they probably did not think the audience would catch due to the fact that J2 came out a few years later. This brings the Orca count to possibly 3. Original Orca, Orca2, and Orca J2. ==== thread RE: Orcas Author: Quint Date: 6/28/01 12:14:07 AM Quint, the author, may EDIT this message. If you look, in Jaws 2 the windows on the port side seem to be broken. It could be a shadow, but it looks to me like they`re broken. Of course, the entire side of the cabin should be demolished. What do you think? Broken or shadow? ===== thread RE: Orcas Author: Quint Date: 6/28/01 12:14:07 AM Quint, the author, may EDIT this message. But if I was gonna mess with it I might add a scene at the end where the Orca is seen at the bottom of the ocean. I`ve watched that sequence a dozen times and it always seems to me that the Quint`s lip flap is mouthing the exact same words "Hooper drives the boat chief." Maybe they didn`t have enough footage after he`d spoken to hold on the shot so they decided to dub the sound before his lips start moving in the hope that no-one would notice. Didn`t work though did it? ===== Where did you put the watch? Author: T3 Date: 6/3/01 4:33:13 AM Email: N/A T3, the author, may EDIT this message. how about this one, When Brody is lounging with his wife he has a watch on his wrist and then a scene later his watch is not on his wrist ===== What`s so funny, punk? Author: T3 Date: 6/3/01 4:32:20 AM Email: N/A T3, the author, may EDIT this message. During the 4th of July panic stampede out of the water (when the bathers see the shark fin that turns out to be a hoax), if you look very carefully in one of the wide shots of the beach, there is a geeky looking kid in white pants and button down shirt who is kind of jumping around and laughing--clearly enjoying all these extras running out of the freezing water on command. ==== thread RE: What`s so funny, punk? Author: hacker12 Date: 6/3/01 4:29:57 AM Email: N/A hacker12, the author, may EDIT this message. Where did the chair go on the ORCA? Details: Early scenes oboard the ORCA, Quint`s ship, Quint is seen fighting the shark with a fishing pole and then loses the shark. Later on at various times, the deck of the ORCA is shown with no chair. Now, I realize that a fighting chair can be removed from a ship, but there would be some kind of mounting hardware still on the deck. Even if it was covered, it would still be visible. These scenes show only a plain wooden deck. ========= Updates Author: Fred Date: 6/2/01 6:30:14 PM Fred, the author, may EDIT this message. Current Thread shown below: ========= I think I know where it is Author: shawn Date: 5/30/01 11:02:14 PM shawn, the author, may EDIT this message. Email: N/A I have been wondering the same thing. Where is the Orca? I may soon have an answer to that question. When I was last in Los Angeles, I went looking around for the famous boat. They moved her out of the pond to film some shots for The Flinstones movie Viva Rock Vegas.....I was pissed they did not put her back when finished. I recently had a meeting to discuss a pilot I produced with the Vice Pres. of Universal. The hull was rotting pretty bad so she is in a sound stage. It seems they are in no hurry to fix her and put her back in the pond. I will be putting in a call in a few weeks to the former VP at Universal, Thom Mount, he maybe able to give me some more info. My dream is to own the Orca and retrofit her to be sea worthy again. We all can dream. ==== thread RE: I think I know where it is Author: Quint Date: 6/28/01 12:08:39 AM Quint, the author, may EDIT this message. I think everybody wants to do that. Email: N/A F.Y.I., I`m not sure as to why I would spend my time writing this letter to you, as your website is obviously for "fun", but just to fill in the blanks-- if any-- is. . . the boats, used for filming, (1 real working boat, and one prop) were destroyed at the end of filming the original JAWS. They were both taken apart by the studio. However, during the production of JAWS 2, a portion of the Orca (prop-boat) was put back together at the end of filming, so that a new scene could be added... reminding viewers of the 1st film`s terror. That scene appears at the beginning of the film featuring two divers stumbling upon the wrecked ship. HISTORY.... During production on JAWS, the REAL boat used in the film also served as a model for a replica boat or as the production crew would say "stunt boat". This was done to allow Spielberg and Butler more freedom in their attempt to manipulate the elements just finish principal photography. As you know, the shark used in the film, BRUCE, was mounted on a trolly system under water -- the same trolly system was used for the stunt boat (which was NEVER a fully functioning craft anyway-- just a shell.) The REAL boat, bought by the production company, for use in the film, was originally to be used for actual "operation shots", however due to the many problems with the stunt boat not working(much like the sharks) the team had to double up its efforts and use the boat for more than was originally planned. In the end, after all was said and done, the day the company packed up and left the Vineyard, orders were sent down from above (Universal, Zanuck, and Brown) to have what was left of the "heavy" props, scrapped..... I hope this has given you some insight into the boat of your dreams. My uncle worked on the film as an assistant.
